Yoga is a holistic discipline that harmonizes body, mind, and spirit through physical postures (asanas), breath control (pranayama), meditation, and ethical principles. Originating in ancient India, it has evolved over thousands of years and is now globally embraced for its numerous benefits.
Compiled by the sage Patanjali around 400 CE, the Yoga Sutras are the foundational text of classical yoga philosophy, consisting of 196 aphorisms divided into four chapters.
Patanjali's Yoga Sutras describe the eight limbs of yoga: yamas (ethical restraints), niyamas (ethical observances), asanas (physical postures), pranayama (breath control), pratyahara (sensory withdrawal), dharana (concentration), dhyana (meditation), and samadhi (unity).
The Yoga Sutras outline different paths: Karma Yoga (selfless action), Bhakti Yoga (devotion), Jnana Yoga (knowledge), and Raja Yoga (meditation).
Yoga today includes diverse styles, from traditional Hatha and Ashtanga to modern Power and Hot Yoga. It has a global influence, practiced for its physical, mental, and spiritual benefits, and is integrated into healthcare, education, sports, and wellness tourism.
